Export on your own computer: Render on this device

Kubrick can render your video in the browser on your own GPU instead of in the cloud. It now covers almost every layer, and shader-heavy projects finish in a fraction of the time.

Kubrick's rigs are drawn with your graphics card while you edit. Cloud render servers don't have one, so they draw those same rigs in software, slowly. Render on this device skips the trip: your browser renders the video on your own GPU, the same way the preview does.

How much faster

For shader and 3D work the difference is large. When the option first shipped on September 29, a shader-heavy music project exported on our test machine in about a minute, where the cloud estimated well over an hour. On device, most frames take a few milliseconds to tens of milliseconds to draw.

What it covers now

The first version only handled a handful of shader and 3D rigs. As of October 11 it covers more than 50 rigs plus text, shapes, icons, images, video, frames and groups, so almost every project qualifies. The next day it picked up multi-scene projects and radial and conic gradients.

Each layer type is checked against the cloud export before it's allowed on device, so what you download looks like what the cloud would have made. When something in your project hasn't been checked yet, Kubrick tells you which layer and why, and uses the cloud for that export.

How to use it

Press Export. Under Render on, choose This device. If it's greyed out, hover it to see the reason.

Good to know

  • Your fonts are loaded before the first frame, so type comes out exactly as it looks in the editor.
  • The cloud is still there for anything the device path doesn't cover yet.
