Nebula: 140,000 particles that hold their breath until the drop

The Nebula rig simulates 140,000 particles on your GPU. A cold ring holds until the song's drop, then bursts into a warm nebula that kicks on every bar, with real rippling tracers.

Most music visuals react a little all the time. Nebula waits.

What it does

It starts as a cold, tight ring of particles. It holds there through the intro. When the song hits its first drop, there's a flash and a shockwave, and the ring breaks into a warm, swirling nebula that kicks on every bar for the rest of the track.

It's a real simulation, not a canned animation: about 140,000 particles move through a flowing field on your graphics card, and each one leaves a tracer that curls exactly the way it moved. Kubrick takes snapshots as it goes, so any frame looks the same whether you scrub straight to it or play up to it.

How to use it

Open Rigs in the toolbar and add Nebula (under Shaders). Put a song in the project and it finds the drop on its own. You can also set the burst to a time of your choosing.

Presets: Drop (the original), Ember, Ion, Smoke, Storm and Aurora. Both dice work on it, and glow, colour fringe, the flash and the backdrop can be keyframed or linked to the music.

It's also in the Music visuals roll, as a background or a midground.

Ideas

  • A lyric video that sits on the ring through the first verse and blooms on the chorus.
  • A product reveal: the logo lands at the exact frame the nebula bursts.
  • Smoke or Aurora behind slow, spoken words, with the tracers turned up.
